Bought tax-free, a Miura KM-700 5–PW set costs about 40% less in Japan than Miura's US store price. A Honma BERES 4S driver is about 17% cheaper.

The Honma TW777 driver works out close to even, within 5% either way. The TW777 360 Ti driver costs less in the US.

What to do, in one line each:

  • Want a Miura KM-700 set or a BERES 4S/5S driver? Buy in Japan. The gap covers shipping and duty.
  • Want a TW777? Buy from Honma US and keep the US warranty.
  • Flying out of Japan soon? Buy before 31 Oct 2026, when the tax still comes off at the till.

Checked in Tokyo on 2026-10-15. We read Honma's Japanese direct shop, PRGR's and Onoff's Japanese product pages, Epon's Japanese catalogue, a Japanese Miura dealer's listing and the Japan Tourism Agency's tax-free page.

Are JDM golf clubs cheaper in Japan? The 10-model table

Yes for Miura and BERES, barely for the TW777, and the five Japan-first brands need an importer quote to compare.

The chart shows the four models with a maker price on both sides.

Exchange rate: ¥157.67 = $1 (Trading Economics, 15 Oct 2026). Prices checked 2026-10-15. A negative gap means Japan is cheaper.

MSRP means the maker's own list price. Honma's Japanese direct shop lists every TW777 and BERES model with its tax-included price range.

How do you work out the Japan vs US price gap?

Small wooden balance scale on a sunlit desk in a Japanese room

Take the yen price, remove the 10% tax, convert to dollars, then compare with the US price.

It is plain arithmetic. You can redo it on any day the yen moves.

¥ ÷ 1.1 $ ÷ 157.67 vs US Tax incl. Tax-free

  1. Japan price. We used the maker's own tax-included price (税込, zeikomi) where one is published: Honma's direct shop, PRGR, Onoff and Royal Collection. Where a range is shown, we took the lowest figure, which is the stock-shaft build.
    • Miura's Japan price comes from a Japanese dealer, golf-shop.jp, because no official Japanese Miura price list was available.
    • Yamaha's price comes from the GDO gear catalogue.
  2. Tax-free price. We divided the tax-included price by 1.1 to remove Japan's 10% consumption tax.
  3. Dollars. We divided both yen figures by ¥157.67 per dollar, Trading Economics' rate for 15 Oct 2026.
  4. US price. For Honma and Miura we used the makers' own US stores, us.honmagolf.com and miuragolf.com.
    • For the other five brands, importers such as Fairway Golf USA set their own prices, and listings change with stock and shaft. Check the listing on the day you order.
  5. Gap. (Japan tax-free USD − US price) ÷ US price.

A 1% move in the yen changes every dollar figure by about 1%. For the TW777, that is enough to flip the result.

How we chose these 10

We started with the JDM brands that US, UK and Australian golfers mention most when they ask about Japan-market gear. Then we picked one or two models per brand that the maker's Japanese page still lists as current on 15 Oct 2026.

That is why Epon appears as the AF-507 and AF-707, which are on the current list, rather than the AF-505 and AF-705. The "PRGR egg" appears as the current SUPER egg.

Is Honma cheaper in Japan than in the US?

BERES is clearly cheaper in Japan; the TW777 line is priced about the same in both markets.

Honma is the one brand where you can compare like for like across many clubs. Both price lists come from Honma itself.

TW777: buy it where you live

At most, tax-free shopping saves you a few dollars on the TW777. A 4% saving on the driver is about $28.

That disappears as soon as you pay international shipping on a driver box. Honestly, for the TW777 driver, Honma US is the easier route than a proxy order (a Japanese buying service that orders and ships for you).

BERES: this is where Japan pays off

The 4S and 5S drivers are already about 9% cheaper in Japan with tax included. Bought tax-free, the 4S saves about $456 against the US 4-Star.

Watch the naming. Japan sells "BERES (2026年モデル)" in 3S/4S/5S grades, while the US store sells "BERES 10" in 3-Star/4-Star/5-Star. Treat them as the nearest equivalents, not proven identical builds.

The Japanese 3S page lists lofts of 9.5°, 10.5° and 11.5°. The shaft is ARMRQ FLIGHT in LIGHT R, R, SR and S. TORAYCA M40X carbon is used from the 3S grade up.

The JP grade: the BERES most US shoppers miss

It is a Japan-only BERES driver at ¥110,000, under half the price of the 3S.

If you want a BERES head and don't need the star-grade shaft, this is the one to look for on a Tokyo shop shelf.

How much cheaper is a Miura KM-700 set in Japan?

Empty driving range with green hitting mats and white golf balls

About 40% cheaper, or roughly $950 on a six-club set — the widest gap in this table.

Two details sit behind that number. Both are worth knowing before you count the saving.

Even with a mid-priced upgrade shaft in Japan, you stay well under the US figure. The $950 gap covers shipping, a proxy fee and the 4.4% US duty several times over.

This is the clearest case in the whole table for buying in Japan.

How do you price Epon, Yamaha, PRGR, Onoff and Royal Collection from the US?

Use the Japanese tax-free price in the main table as your benchmark, then compare your importer's quote.

For these five, set the Japanese price against the quote from your importer.

Buy in Tokyo Proxy US store

The rule of thumb: if the importer charges more than about 15% over the "JP tax-free (USD)" figure, ordering from Japan starts to make sense. Add shipping and duty from our import guide first.

Epon AF-507 and AF-707

For Epon, get a price quote from a dealer in Japan and from your importer, then compare the two.

The current iron range on epongolf.co.jp has eight models: AF-Tour MB, AF-Tour CB, AF-307, AF-507, AF-707, EF-02I, S:R Iron and S:R LD Iron. The AF-505 and AF-705 are no longer listed, so a listing selling those as new is selling old stock.

Stock shafts and set make-up vary by build. Check Epon's Japanese product page for the current stock shaft and the clubs in a set before you order.

PRGR SUPER egg

Read this one twice. PRGR's own page says it does not conform to the R&A and USGA rules (SLEルール適合外品) and is for private rounds only.

PRGR also asks golfers with a head speed of 43 m/s (about 96 mph) or more not to hit it.

PRGR's flex labels show what "Japan spec" means in practice:

Those are softer bands than a US "Regular" buyer usually expects.

  • If you play club competitions or keep a handicap, a conforming driver suits you better.
  • If you play casual rounds at a slower swing speed, you are exactly the golfer it was built for.

Onoff Driver Kuro

¥96,800 with the stock CBT:626D shaft in S, at 9.5° or 10.5° and 460cc. That works out to $558 tax-free.

Onoff’s Japanese DRIVER KURO page with price and specsを見る(clubonoff.globeride.co.jp)

Yamaha inpres DRIVESTAR TYPE/D

GDO's gear catalogue lists it at ¥97,900 at launch on 20 September 2024. Yamaha refreshes this range, so check Yamaha's Japanese site for a newer model before you buy.

Royal Collection

Royal Collection sells direct on royalcollection.co.jp:

  • VX MAX 3W and 5W: ¥68,200
  • VT hybrid: ¥52,800
  • RC BB PLUS wedge: ¥28,600

Shaft codes end in H or M. Match the code to the flex you want before you add one to your cart.

How does tax-free shopping in Japan change on 1 November 2026?

Teal suitcase by a bright airport window with a plane outside

Until 31 October the tax comes off at the till; from 1 November you pay full price and get a refund after the airport customs check.

Most English guides skip this, and it changes how you pay this month.

To 31 Oct: tax off From 1 Nov: refund

Rule Purchases up to 31 Oct 2026 Purchases from 1 Nov 2026
What you pay at the shop Price without the 10% tax Full tax-included price
How the tax comes back Not charged in the first place Refund (リファンド方式, refund method) after customs confirms the goods left Japan
Who pays the refund — The shop or its refund agent (委託を受けた返金事業者)
Minimum spend ¥5,000 before tax, same shop, same day ¥5,000 before tax, same shop, same day
Time limit — Customs confirmation within 90 days of purchase

For golfers, the last row matters most. Under the refund method, the clubs must be with you at the customs kiosk before you hand over your bag.

So on departure day:

  1. Bring the clubs to the airport early.
  2. Go through the customs check first.
  3. Then drop the bag at check-in.

Ask at the shop how the refund will come back to you, and expect the amount to be "up to" the 10%.

If your trip allows it, buying before 31 October is the simpler route. On a BERES 4S driver, that is ¥33,800 that never leaves your card.

Is it still cheaper after US duty and shipping?

For BERES 4S/5S and the Miura KM-700, yes; for the TW777, no.

The gap in the table is not all savings. Duty and shipping come out of it first.

US duty on complete golf clubs (HTS 9506.31.00.00, the US tariff code) has a general rate of 4.4% on the USITC tariff schedule. Extra tariffs and the low-value import rules changed several times in 2026. Check the current CBP position before you count on the general rate alone.

Using the tax-free figures:

If you are… Expect…
Buying a TW777 driver, FW or 360 Ti No real saving after shipping. Buy from Honma US and keep the US warranty
Buying a BERES 4S or 5S A gap of 17.5% in Japan's favour. Big enough to cover duty and insured shipping
Buying a Miura KM-700 set A gap of about 40%, the widest here. Worth the 3–5 week wait either way
Wanting a BERES JP grade Japan is the only source. Buy in Tokyo or through a proxy
Playing competitions Choose something other than the SUPER egg; PRGR says it does not conform to the rules

Recap

  • TW777: close to even. Tax-free saves 4.4% on the driver, and the 360 Ti costs less in the US.
  • BERES: the 4S and 5S are 17.5% cheaper tax-free. The Japan-only JP grade driver costs ¥110,000.
  • Miura KM-700: about 40% cheaper as a Japanese dealer set, before shaft upgrades.
  • Epon: ask a dealer for the price on either side. The AF-507 and AF-707 are on Epon's current eight-model iron list.
  • Visitors: buy before 31 Oct 2026 and the tax comes off at the till. From 1 Nov, pay full price and claim the refund after the customs check.

Your next step: find your model's gap in the table above. Set it against the proxy fee, shipping and duty in our JDM import guide, then buy through whichever route comes out cheaper on the day you order.
